Dr. Mallikarjun Patil

Prof Mallikarjun Patil, madam’s husband, is a Professor and Chairman, Department of English, Karnatak University, Dharwad for three times and his second term of headship is a return of the golden age in that department. He was a Professor of English, Gulbarga University from 1995 to 2003. Then he was the founder-head, Department of English, Karnataka State Women’s University, Bijapur.


          Francis Bacon says, ‘Reading maketh a full man.’ Reading is a noble habit. Studies bring us ‘sweetness and light.’ Dr Patil is a novelist, playwright, short story writer, critic and translator.


Personal: He is born in a Lingayat family in Dharwad in 1967. He did his MA and PhD from Karnatak University. He did a PGDTE from EFL University, Hyderabad. He passed SLET in 1994. He had a fellowship from Oxford and did a certificate course there in 2001. England’s experience was wonderful and that transformed his life. He has married Dr Nanda Patil, a great performing artist in Hindustani music and both his son and daughter are artists. Dr Patil was an Assistant Professor of English at Gulbarga University and Head and an Associate Professor at Women’s University, Bijapur formerly. Now he is Professor and Chairman, Department of English, Karnatak University.

 

Writings: Patil began to read early in English literature. His PhD on Hardy provided him an introduction to serious literature. So he began creative writing. He has his own publication called Shivanagouda Patil Publication.

 

Academic Activities: Patil has guided twelve PhDs and several M.Phils so far. He is a BOE, BOS and BOA member and a resource person for many universities/conferences in India. His radio talks are broadcast from AIR, Dharwad, Gulbarga and Hyderabad and published. His TV interviews are broadcast. He has presented papers in national and international seminars (and published them in books, journals and encyclopedias of repute). K.N. Gudugi has done an M.Phil on his travel accounts. Patil’s book reviews are erudite. He is a fine freelance journalist.


Now Dr Patil is heading the Dept of English, Karnatak University for the third time. What more he is busy in his activities at Dr Nanda Patil Sangeeta Academy which he has founded in honour of his artiste-wife Dr Nanda Patil in May 2016.

    Dr Mallikarjun Patil is a novelist, playwright, short story writer, critic and translator

    Novels:

    1. When the Ground Shakes Beneath (2008, 200/-) is a modernist novel which is translated and published in Kannada, Gujarati, Panjabi and Hindi. Australian writer J.W. McMilan writes, ‘Patil weaves the story of a young man and two sisters into an account of the disastrous earthquake in Gujarat in January 2001 and shows the many ramifications in the lives of those involved. It is a book to be read more than once!’
    2. A Don in the Jungle (2008. 200/-) is a fictionalized political novel based on Veerappan’s misdeeds.
    3. Under the Mango Tree (2009. 200/-) is a farm novel reminding Markandaya’s Nectar in a Sieve and Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath. This is translated into Kannada (Raita Kallappana Aatmahatye), Telugu () and Marathi (Phas!). These three novels may be studied as a ‘Disaster Trilogy.’

     

  • Short Stories: Patil’s short stories are published in journals and magazines.

    • This is India and Other Stories (2010, 100/-) consists of 17 stories.
    • Scenes from Indian Life (2012, 100/-) consists of 27 well narrated stories with experiment in narrative technique.
    • Shalmala and Other Stories (2015, 100/-9788192840338) is a book of short stories.
