Dr. Nanda Patil

Artist Dr. Nanda Patil (b 1963) is from Dharwad. She has grown up in the cultural atmosphere with a specialization in Hindustani music. She has, as a vocalist, served this society, this country. She graduated in B. Music and M. Music from Karnatak University in distinction with gold medals and had the state award. She stood first to the state in music exams for senior and proficiency conducted by KSEE Board. She had her PhD in folk-music with reference to Tulasi-Sanmana awardee Balappa Hukkeri in 1997. Nanda Patil has been working as an Associate Professor in Hindustani Music (vocal) at the University College of Music and Fine Arts, Dharwad since 1987. She is a PhD guide too, having guided students like Dr Shakti Patil and Dr Siddharam Matapathi. She has been presenting papers at all India seminars and has published them in journals and books. Kannada University, Hampi has published her books on Balappa Hukkeri and Pt. Basavaraj Rajaguru. Her scripts on Pt Mallikarjun Mansur and Pt Bhimasen Joshi await publication. She was for a term from 2001 to 2004, a member of Karnatak Sangita-Nritya Academy, Bangaluru. Karnatak Government has nominated her as the Syndicate Member of Karnatak State Dr. Gangubai Hanagal Music and Performing Arts University, Mysore from 2015. Nanda Patil has a social concern and she has instituted endowment lectures in the name of her late father Mallikarjunagouda Patil and her husband Dr Mallikarjun Patil at K.V.V. Sangha, Dharwad. There is “Dr Nanda Patil Vachana Sangeeta Puraskar,” an annual cash award of Rs.10,000/- in her name from K.V.V. Sangha, Dharwad since 2014. Young artists Pt. Kumar Maradur from Kolkata (in 2014) , Mrityunjaya Shettar from Gadag (in 2015) and Dr. Jayadevi Jangamsetti (2016) have got the award so far. Madam Patil herself has got such awards and honours like ‘Ganakogile,’ ‘Halakattishree,’ 'Akka Nagamma' (2016) and ‘Avva' (2017).


Dr. Nanda Patil's PhD student Harish Hegde has written a monograph on the artist in 2017 and the same was released at Dr. Nanda Patil Sangeetotsava , 02/03/2017.


Murughamath, Chitradurga, awarded her its prestigious award ‘Akka Nagamma’ (with a cash award of Rs.25000) in 2016.


Dr. Nanda Patil is mainly a classical Hindustani vocalist. She is an outstanding singer of Gwalior-Jaipur gharanas. Nanda Patil who has been tutored by gurus such as Pt Sudhindra Dandapur, Pt Narayanarao Muzumdar, Smt Sharada Hanagal and Pt Rajashekhar Mansur, has through her sadhana and service in music, enriched the field of Hindustani music. Her concerts have been broadcast from radio and television, and her concerts are given all over the country since 1975. Pratibe, a journal (in 2013) quotes, “She is the epitome of scholarship, knowledge, experience, public concerts, goodwill and aesthetic appreciation of music.”


Dr Nanda Patil has from her age of eight given 1000 concerts all over the country. Radio concerts are simply numerous. She gave concerts for Mysore Dasara, Hampi Utsava, Kadambotsava, Vachana Sangitotsava and others organized by the Dept of Kannada and Culture, Government of Karnataka. She gave special concerts in Annamalai and Bombay in 2001, and concerts at places like Lucknow in 2004. Her 1999 concert at the International Conference on Grammar at EFL University, Hyderabad mesmerized the western audience. Dr Patil’s vachana albums Akka Kelavva, Ennodeya Sangamanath and Salahu Kudalasangamadeva are popular not only in India but also in places in Europe, America and Australia.


Dr Nanda Patil is an attractive personality. She is a ‘Ganakogile,’ a born singer. Her family is full of cultural ambience. Her neighbor poet V.C. Airasang writes, “She’s a musical flower/ for their life’s vine/see, how it’s in full bloom / the Patil’s family in fragrance / see, it is Nanda, the cuckoo sings.”


Dr. Nanda Patil’s husband Dr Mallikarjun Patil is Professor and Head, Department of English, Karnatak Univeristy, Dharwad. He is a bilingual writer par excellence.


Dr Nanda Patil’s son Shivakumar, a BE graduate at BVB Engineering College, Hubli is a master in Hindustani music. So is his sister Ashwini Patil, now settled down in America. Dr Mallikarjun Patil has established the present academy to honour his wife and it is for the cause of music.


Dr Nanda Patil’s autobiography Svarayatre (2013) is a popular autobiographical narrative with touches about the history-line of Dharwad. Dr De Ja Gou in his foreword to the book writes, “Mrs Patil is an outstanding Hindustani classical singer India has ever seen. She is a musicologist too. This autobiography speaks for all artists.” Dr. M.M. Kalaburgi feels that though Nanda Patil has voice problem recently, she is heard through her academic works, and through her son and daughter.”
